A small family-run place in Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo — where the sloths are in the trees above the pool and the black sand is seven minutes' walk away.
You will know which one is yours from the far end of the garden.
Every casita here is painted its own colour — orange, turquoise, yellow, fuchsia, lilac, red, mint, green, blue. Nine of them, set apart from each other in a garden of old trees, with a pool in the middle and the jungle pressing in on every side.
Each one is a whole small house: its own kitchenette, its own bathroom with hot water, ceiling fans, a patio with chairs facing the garden or the water. Not a hotel corridor. Not somebody else's living room.
We are a family running a small place, and we are usually here. If you need a tour booked, a taxi at six in the morning, or somewhere to put a wet swimsuit, ask us.

Three shapes of casita
Two people, three, or a family of five — the difference is how many rooms you get, not how well you are looked after.
The garden does not close at sunset.
The pool is lit after dark, there are two ranchos with tables under them, and two charcoal grills we built ourselves. Most evenings somebody is cooking.
Bring fish back from the market in Puerto Viejo, or something for the grill from the supermarket down the road. The blue morpho butterflies come through in the morning; the sloths are slower and stay all week.

Seven minutes to the black sand, ten on a bicycle to town.
Playa Negra is the quiet end of Puerto Viejo: volcanic sand, driftwood, and far fewer people than the beaches south of town.
Ride the other way and you are in Puerto Viejo in ten minutes, among the restaurants and the reggae and the bicycle-repair stands. Cahuita National Park is half an hour north; Punta Uva and Manzanillo are half an hour south, and worth the ride.
